Bell Wins MEAC Long Jump Title; Spartans in 4th after Day 2

Day 2 Results

LANDOVER, Md. – First-year sophomore Champagne Bell won the conference title in the long jump on Friday at her first-ever MEAC championship meet. Her best leap of 19 feet, 5.5 inches was the top highlight of the day as the Spartan women are currently in fourth place heading into the third and final day of the conference indoor meet at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The Hampton women are in first place with 81.5 points, followed by UMES (52), Morgan State (39) and NSU (31.5).

Bell also qualified for Saturday's finals in the 200 (25.21) and 400 meters (56.46).

Teammate Shanneka Claiborne set a new PR in qualifying first for Saturday's final in the 60 meters. She posted the top qualifying time of 7.41 seconds, .04 ahead of her previous PR, which she set in winning the MEAC title last year. Claiborne was also the third-fastest qualifier in the 200 (24.75, PR).

Senior Jonee Artis tied for fourth in the high jump with a top height of 5-5. Teammates Tanisha Jenkins and Wanetta Kirby also cleared 5-5, but finished seventh and eighth, respectively, based on more misses.

In addition to Bell, Ashanti Matthews placed sixth in the long jump (18-3.75). Matthews and Kirby also qualified for Saturday's finals in the 60 meter hurdles.

Competition resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the pole vault and pentathlon events.
