LANDOVER, Md. – The Norfolk State women's track team rode a strong day from its field athletes to a second-place finish Saturday at the 2011 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Spartan women, who were fourth entering Saturday, finished with 102.5 points, trailing only Hampton (188.5).
The Spartan women displayed their depth in the field events. Junior Katie Wright won her third straight MEAC indoor pole vault title, breaking her own meet record with a top clearance on Saturday of 11 feet, 2.25 inches. Ashleigh Joseph placed fourth in the event (9-2.5) and Andrea Saunders was fifth (8-8.75).
Earlier in the day, senior Elaine Rhoades won the heptathlon with 3,537 points. Teammate Tanisha Jenkins was third with 3,383 points, and Alaina Hite was seventh with 3,035.
Rhoades also placed third in the triple jump (38-8.75).
Shanneka Claiborne fell just short in defending her 2010 60-meter title. Officially, she and Hampton's Racquel Vassell both ran times of 7.43 seconds. Vassell's actual time was 7.420 and Claiborne had to settle for second with her 7.423.
Elsewhere Saturday, Champagne Bell was the runner-up in the 400 meters, clocking a time of 56.16 seconds.
