CNU Triumphs over NSU, 7-2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Playing on its home court, Christopher Newport defeated the Norfolk State men's tennis team, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the CNU Outdoor Courts.

Junior Arsenio Culver won in both singles and doubles, but the Captains took every other match on the day to improve to 6-2 on the season. NSU saw its record drop to 2-11 overall.

Culver won in straight sets over Eric Shulman, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and also picked up an 8-2 victory over Matt King and Garrett Widing at No. 1 doubles along with junior Ben Marks. It marked Culver's third-straight singles win and the fourth straight victory for he and Marks in doubles play.

CNU held a 2-1 lead heading into singles play after Shulman and Dusty Nelson knocked off junior Christian Romanzini and freshman Kent Austin, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. Junior Jonathan Sessom and freshman Brian Bullock also fell victim to the Captains at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, against Gian Heyer and Kyle Tobin.

Despite several close matches, the Spartans could not pull out any other wins in singles action aside from Culver's conquest. Romanzini, at No. 3 singles, defeated Widing by a 7-5 score in the first set before Widing settled down to win the last two sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Bullock nearly took down Lorenzo Sison at No. 6 singles, but Sison won the first-set tiebreaker, 7-4, for a 7-6 win in the first set before easing through a 6-3 victory in the second set. Austin stayed close to Nelson at the fifth singles slot before dropping a 7-5, 6-4 decision.

In the other two matches on the day, Marks fell to Heyer at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4, while Sessom also fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to King at the fourth singles position.

NSU will look to get back on track at Virginia State Friday at 4 p.m.
