NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team ended a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Delaware State Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at the NSU Softball Field.
Delaware State (5-2) shut down the Spartans in a 5-0 victory in Game 1, but junior
Casey Pomeroy gave up one earned run in seven innings to pick up the win in the second game. Junior center fielder
Danielle Wright hit her fourth home run of the season, and NSU (3-7) tallied another run in the bottom of the third for the win.
Pomeroy gave up seven hits but struck out nine to improve to 1-1 on the year. NSU had just three hits in Game 2, and Pomeroy made them count as the Hornets left eight players on base.
Ashlyn Campbell shut down the Spartans in Game 1, allowing just four hits in seven innings for her first win of the season. She ran her scoreless innings streak to 17.1 to start the 2011 season. The Hornets tallied a pair of runs in the third inning, and then added a trio of insurance runs in the top of the sixth for the final scoring margin.
In Game 2, Wright lined a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence to get NSU on the scoreboard first. It was Wright's fourth home run of the year and second to lead off the game.
Junior
Jeanette Sauceda got hit by the pitch as she led off the bottom of the third, then reached second on a fielding error by the third baseman and got to third on a fielder's choice. Sophomore
Gipsy Ramirez pinch hit for left fielder
Alexa Fleming and launched a sacrifice fly to left field to score Sauceda.
After leaving four batters on base in scoring position in the first three innings, including runners on second and third with no outs in the second, the Hornets finally pushed across a run in the top of the fifth. Delaware State hit three straight singles with one out to load the bases, and Casey Beighley hit a medium fly ball to center to score Delaware State's first run of the game. Pomeroy got Breanne Parr looking on strike three to end the threat.
Janelle Lukens had three hits for the Hornets, while Jordan Reid added a pair of singles. Wright had two of NSU's three hits in the second game.
Both teams threatened in the first inning of Game 1 but were unable to push across a run. Beighley doubled into the left field corner with one out to put runners in scoring position, but senior starter
Alyssa Velazquez froze the next batter at the plate for the second out and got out of the jam when Andrea Waters popped up to short.
Wright and freshman
Nikki Jones singled to open up the bottom of the first inning and got into scoring position one out later, but Campbell struck out the next two batters to end the Spartan threat. NSU left eight batters on base in Game 2.
Reid doubled to open the top of the third inning and advanced to third base on an illegal pitch, and Lukens hit a blooper to center field. Reid was forced to wait at third to see if Wright would make the catch. Reid took off for home once the ball landed in front of the NSU center fielder, but Wright gunned done Reid for the first out of the inning to keep Delaware State off the board.
With two outs in the inning, though, Lukens scored when Parr launched a home run over the left field fence to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. On the other end, Campbell retired 13 batters in a row at one point to keep NSU scoreless.
Then, in the top of the sixth, Beighley doubled between Wright and Fleming in right-center field and scored two batters later when Waters singled to left. Tawny Reeger scored Waters one out later on a single into left field, and then Rachel Carroll greeted NSU relief pitcher
Jamie Schulle with a double into the right field corner to score Stephanie Martello for the final run of the game.
Velazquez suffered the loss in the first game, giving up all five runs and 10 hits in 5.1 innings, as her record fell to 1-2 on the year. Jones had two hits for the Spartans, while Reid, Lukens, Beighley and Parr each tallied a pair of hits for Delaware State.
NSU will play its first road games of the season Wednesday as the Spartans head to James Madison for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
