BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior Wanetta Kirby had a hand in two first-place finishes and Shanneka Claiborne matched her season-best time in winning the 100 meters as the Spartan women's track team competed Saturday at the Donald Webster Invitational hosted by Coppin State.
Kirby jumped a season-best 19 feet, 2 inches to win the long jump. She also ran one leg of the victorious 4x400 meter relay team which logged its best time of the season. Kirby also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles.
The 4x400 team of Kirby, Ashanti Matthews, Champagne Bell and Rayiana Johnson crossed the finish line in 3 minutes, 51.87 seconds. The only other time NSU had run the 4x400 this outdoor season, the Spartans posted a time of 3:58.52 at the Raleigh Relays.
Kirby was the fastest qualifier in the 100 hurdles (14.57), but fell to Howard's Tracey Fan Fan by .02 in the finals. Fan Fan ran a 14.81, Kirby a 14.83.
Claiborne, meanwhile, was not seriously threatened in the 100. She qualified first in 11.94 and won in 11.91, matching her time from the Raleigh Relays for her best effort of the season.
In other events, Rhoades was second in the long jump (17-6.75) and third in the 400 hurdles (1:04.84). Matthews placed third in the 100 hurdles (15.00). Tanisha Jenkins cleared 5-3 to place third in the high jump, Matthews leapt 37-5.75 to claim third in the triple jump, and Kaleena Gray threw a season-best 39-1.75 to finish third in the shot put.
NSU is off next week, but hopes to have a number of competitors accepted to participate in the Penn Relays, April 27-30 in Philadelphia.
