Spartans Overpower Virginia Wesleyan, 7-0

NORFOLK, Va.
– In the last home match of the season, the Norfolk State men's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Courts.

The Spartans improved to 5-12 on the season as they won every match on the day, including a pair of tight battles, as they dropped the Marlins to 4-10 overall.

NSU got things started in doubles, where the duo of juniors Arsenio Culver and Ben Marks posted an 8-1 victory over Zak Bartley and Steven Bond at No. 1 doubles. Two more juniors in Jonathan Sessom and Christian Romanzini also won by an 8-1 score, downing Sky Masand and Ryan Sadinski at No. 2 doubles.

In the third doubles match, freshman Kent Austin and Brian Bullock grabbed an 8-2 win over Jamie Griffin and Donnie Greathouse for the early 1-0 lead.

Bullock faced Greathouse at No. 6 singles and faced the toughest test for the Spartans. Bullock won the first set, 6-2, before Greathouse came back to win the second set, 6-4. Bullock survived in the third set tiebreaker, winning 10-7 for the match victory.

Romanzini battled Sadinski at No. 4 singles, and Romanzini survived the first set, 7-6, after winning the tiebreaker, 7-5. He cruised to the win with a 6-1 victory in the second set. At the fifth singles spot, Austin came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Griffin.

At the top of the lineup, Sessom posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bond at No. 3 singles, while Marks came out on top against Masand at the second singles slot, 6-2, 6-2. Culver beat Bartley at No. 1 singles by a 6-0 score in the first set and was leading 1-0 in the second before Bartley retired from the match.

NSU will now hit the road to close out the regular season, facing UMBC Saturday at 10 a.m. in Baltimore before heading to the MEAC Tournament in a week and a half.
