PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – NSU got season-best performances in the high jump and triple jump as the Spartan women took a small contingent of athletes to the Penn Relays last weekend.
With a number of their teammates resting for next weekend's conference outdoor championship meet, seniors Wanetta Kirby and Elaine Rhoades and sophomore Champagne Bell represented NSU well last weekend. Rhoades placed 16th in the college women's triple jump with a top leap of 39 feet, 0.5 inch. It was her best triple jump of the season by more than a foot and a half, and more than a foot better than the team's previous best set by junior Alaina Hite (38-00.25 at the Tribe Open).
Kirby tied for seventh in the college women's high jump. She cleared a top height of 5 feet, 6 inches, some three inches better than the team's best performance in the event this season. Both Kirby and Tanisha Jenkins had cleared 5-3 earlier in the season.
Bell placed second in the Eastern section of the women's long jump (19-9).
In addition, sophomore Kaleena Gray finished 13th in the college shot put (41-8.75).
The Spartans will look for their first MEAC outdoor track & field championship since 2001 when they compete this Thursday through Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
