NORFOLK, Va. - Despite running one of her top times of the season in what was arguably the toughest heat, NSU sprinter Shanneka Claiborne came up just shy of advancing to nationals in the 100 meters on Friday night at the NCAA East Region meet hosted by Indiana University.
Claiborne was fifth in her heat in a time of 11.59 seconds. The four runners who finished ahead of Claiborne in her heat all advanced through to nationals. Only the top three from each heat, plus the next three fastest overall times, advanced to nationals. In all, Claiborne was 14th out of 24 runners in the quarterfinals, just .02 out of a qualifying spot.
Claiborne – MEAC champion in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay – also posted a time of 24.63 seconds in her qualifying heat of the 200 meters, not good enough to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. Claiborne will, however, run as part of the Spartans' 4x100 relay team on Saturday.
