Spartan Women Surge into Lead at MEAC Outdoor Track Championship

Results - Through Day 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Some stellar performances in the field events and decathlon helped vault the Norfolk State women's track and field team into first place after the second day of competition at the 2011 MEAC Outdoor Championships at the Irwin Belk track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

The Spartan women have 47 points after five events, while defending champion Hampton is second with 39.

The Spartan women got the day off to a good start as senior Elaine Rhoades and junior Ashanti Matthews finished first and second, respectively, in the heptathlon. Rhoades tallied 4,500 points while Matthews had 4,378. Teammate Alaina Hite placed fifth with 4,152. 

The Spartans' jumpers then took center stage. First-year sophomore Champagne Bell took second place in the long jump with a best leap of 20 feet, 3 inches. Senior Wanetta Kirby finished sixth (19-1.5). Kirby cleared a personal outdoor-best height of 5 feet, 7 inches in placing second in the high jump.

In Friday's running event semifinals, senior Shanneka Claiborne blazed the track to the tune of a personal-best time of 11.43 seconds in the 100 meters, qualifying first for Saturday's final. She also set a PR and was the second-fastest qualifier in the 200 meters with a time of 24.03 seconds. Bell also qualified for the 200 final in a PR of 24.21, the eighth-best qualifying time.
