Spartans Drop Consolation Matchup to UMKC, 63-57

Box Score UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Despite having a huge advantage in shot attempts and offensive rebounds, the Norfolk State men's basketball team could not overcome both UMKC's late success at the free throw line and efficient shooting throughout the game in a 63-57 loss in the consolation of the Springfield bracket at the 2012 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday.

The Spartans (2-3) held a 15-3 advantage on the offensive glass but could only convert on 37.7 percent from the floor on 23-of-61 shooting in a late morning contest at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Roos, meanwhile, hit an efficient 18-of-38 (47.4 percent) to even their record at 2-2.

UMKC's 21-of-29 effort from the free throw line and several key 3-pointers late in the game helped seal the win. The Roos hit 7-of-8 in the final minute of play from the charity stripe.

The Spartans outscored the Roos by a 26-16 margin in the paint as well as by 14-1 in second chance points. Junior Brandon Goode led NSU with 12 points and six boards, while senior Rob Johnson also joined him in double figures with 11 points and six rebounds.

Estan Tyler and Thomas Staton tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Roos. Staton and forward Kirk Korver nailed three of the team's six 3-pointers in a two-and-a-half minute span with less than 7:30 to go in the game to help UMKC pull ahead for good.

Trinity Hall contributed 11 points for UMKC and scored the first game's first seven to help the Roos run out to an early 10-1 lead. Neither team found much offense for the next several minutes, but the Roos did finally extend their lead to 13-6 on a traditional 3-point play from Nate Rogers at the 11:23 mark.

A 3-pointer from NSU junior Jordan Weathers started a 12-1 Spartan run that lasted two and a half minutes and was capped when Johnson got a nice kiss off the glass on a reverse layup. UMKC countered with a 7-0 run before junior Kievyn Lila-St. Rose drained a high-arching trey from the left corner to tie it at 21-all at the 5:10 mark

Senior Kris Brown left a defender in his wake and was wide open for a jumper from just inside the foul line with 1:45 left, cutting the UMKC lead to just one, 26-25. That basket finished the first-half scoring as NSU trailed by just one despite shooting 30.3 percent from the floor in the first stanza.

The Roos hit 9-of-12 from the foul line in the first half but trailed on the boards by 10. NSU finished the game with a 35-29 advantage on the glass.

A pair of buckets by Goode early in the second half kept NSU to within one. UMKC, though, went on a 10-0 run over a three-minute span to take a 10-point lead at the 13:37 mark before Johnson drove to the hole for two to get NSU back to within single digits.

That Johnson bucket started a 12-0 Spartan run, as NSU kept the Roos scoreless for six minutes before Korver ended the drought by connecting on a deep 3 from the right wing with 7:28 left. Another trey from Staton and Korver's second of the game kept the Roos in the lead as the clocked ticked down to less than five minutes to go.

UMKC didn't make a bucket in the last four minutes of play, and Brown's drive to the hoop with 22.3 seconds left marked the Spartans' only basket in a five-minute span as the Roos held on for the victory.

Brown finished with seven points and four assists, while Weathers had a game-high four steals with six points. Freshman Rashid Gaston posted nine points and a game-high nine rebounds off the bench.

NSU will return to the court after the Thanksgiving holiday with a pair of contests in the state of Kentucky, beginning with Eastern Kentucky next Saturday at 7 p.m.
