Warren, Howell Lead N.C. State to 84-62 Win over NSU

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – T.J. Warren tallied a game-high 21 points off the bench, and Richard Howell added 12 points and 19 rebounds to lead No. 25 North Carolina State to an 84-62 win over the Norfolk State men's basketball team Saturday night at PNC Arena.

N.C. State came into the game second in the nation in shooting and did not disappoint the home crowd. The Wolfpack hit 31-of-54 (57.4 percent) for the game thanks to a relentless offensive push that rarely went to a halfcourt set. N.C. State was credited with 30 fastbreak points.

The Wolfpack improved to 7-2 on the season, while NSU fell to 6-7 after connecting on just 32.8 percent from the floor (21-of-64). Junior Malcolm Hawkins led the Spartans with 16 points, including 9-of-11 from the free throw line, all in the second half.

Lorenzo Brown added 16 points, seven assists and four steals for N.C. State, which held a 42-32 edge on the boards thanks to Howell's career high 19. Howell also added five blocks and five assists, as the Wolfpack had 21 assists on their 31 baskets.

A three-point play and a trey from Lorenzo Brown helped the Wolfpack take a quick 14-4 lead in the first four and a half minutes of play. A 3-pointer from senior Rob Johnson and then another from redshirt junior Marese Phelps at 10:47, the latter his first career points at NSU, cut the N.C. State lead to four, 18-14.

After N.C. State went up by seven, 23-16, Phelps quickly drove to the hoop for two and senior Kris Brown scored two when C.J. Leslie was called for goaltending. That bucket cut the deficit to one, 23-22, at the 6:59 mark. The Wolfpack, however, went on a 15-3 run to close out the half to take a 13-point lead into the break, 38-25.

Lorenzo Brown had 12 points and was a perfect 5-of-5 in the first half of play. He finished 7-of-8 overall for the game.

NSU had to call timeout after the Wolfpack scored five of the first six points of the second half. N.C. State eventually pushed the lead to 22 when Warren got free on a screen down low. NSU stopped the bleeding with an 11-2 run, which included seven points from Hawkins, to cut it to 13, 56-43, with 11:22 left.

N.C. State pushed the lead to 19 on the heels of a 10-4 run, making it 66-47 with 6:56 left. NSU got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Freshman Rashid Gaston added 11 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Spartans. Brown posted eight points, while junior Jamel Fuentes added seven points and four assists.

Leslie and Rodney Purvis also scored in double figures for N.C. State with 11 and 10, respectively.

NSU will take a week off before heading to Iona on Dec. 23 to play a 2 p.m. contest prior to the Christmas break.
