DOVER, Del. – The No. 11 Norfolk State bowling team captured the team title at the Capital Classic over the weekend hosted by Delaware State, including three wins on Sunday to cap a 10-2 weekend at the three-day event.
NSU improved its overall record to 71-30 on the year and captured its third tournament title of the season following the MEAC Southern Division in December and the Lady Bulldog Classic in January. The Spartans broke their previous school record for wins in a season of 67, set in 2009-10 and again in 2010-11.
The Spartans went 4-0 on Day 1 in Baker play on Friday with a bye in the middle, followed by a 3-2 record on Saturday in team play. NSU's only two losses of the tournament were to No. 12 New Jersey City and No. 13 Delaware State that day. The Spartans then swept through three of the top four seeds in the tournament on Sunday to take home the title.
Senior Chelsea Krall and freshman Carrie Hickey were each named to the all-tournament team for their performances. Krall had the highest average of the tournament for the Spartans with a 196.0 in four games, while Hickey posted a 194.2 average in all five games on Saturday. Freshman Delilah Bethel tallied a 189.6 average in five games to lead the Spartans as well.
Sophomore Thea Aspiras (173.8 average) and junior Jessica Overton (167.3) each bowled in four games for NSU. Freshman Kelsea Yarbrough rolled a 173 in one game, and Lauren Graupmann competed in two games as well.
Seeded third on Sunday following the first two days of action, NSU downed No. 4 seed St. Francis (N.Y.) 4.5-2.5 in Baker play, including a win in the last game of the match, 217-183. The Spartans advanced to face second seeded Delaware State and got revenge for the loss earlier in the tournament with a 4-0 sweep of the Hornets.
NSU then moved on to the championship match against the top seed of the tournament, New Jersey City. After the Gothic Knights won the sixth game to force a Game 7, the Spartans again won the final game of the match, 208-158, to defeat New Jersey City by a 4-3 score for the title.
The Spartans kicked off the tournament on Friday in Baker play, upending Tulane, 771-557, and Morgan State, 714-591, to get things off on the right foot. The Spartans then defeated Florida A&M, 622-592, and bowled in a bye before winning the fourth match of the day, 745-616, against St. Francis (N.Y.).
Then, on Saturday, the Spartans used a big game from Bethel to earn a 970-840 win over Hampton, which was followed by another victory, 857-781, against North Carolina A&T. NSU then suffered its only two losses of the tournament, 1,056-875 to New Jersey City and 947-938 against Delaware State, before rebounding with a 898-782 victory over Howard.
NSU will head to the Morgan State Invitational next weekend, with competition getting underway on Friday.
