TOWSON, Md. – The No. 11 Norfolk State bowling team finished with a 7-4 record and in 11th place overall after the last day of play at the three-day Morgan State Invitational over the weekend.
NSU finished 3-2 on the first day of play on Friday, and then posted a 3-1 record in team play on Saturday, with the Spartans also bowling a fifth match during a bye. Seeded ninth heading into Sunday's action, NSU went 1-1 to finish 11th out of 23 teams. The Spartans ran their overall record to 78-34 on the season.
Sophomore
Thea Aspiras had a solid weekend for NSU, posting a 202.6 average in all five games on Saturday. Freshman
Kelsea Yarbrough topped the 200 plateau as she tallied a 201.5 average in four games. Junior
Lauren Graupmann rolled a 188.6 average, while senior
Chelsea Krall had a 175.4 average, with both competing in all five games.
Freshman
Carrie Hickey posted a 183.0 average in three games, while junior
Jessica Overton bowled in two games and freshman
Delilah Bethel competed in one game as well.
On Friday in Baker play, the Spartans opened things up with an 801-737 loss to No. 8 Nebraska before rebounding with three straight wins. NSU downed Fayetteville State, 742-665, followed by an 822-654 triumph over No. 14 Kutztown. The Spartans easily defeated Bethune-Cookman, 781-677, before falling to Elmhurst, 741-727, to finish the day.
In team play on Saturday, NSU began with the bye and then defeated a pair of MEAC Southern Division foes, North Carolina A&T, 885-811, and North Carolina Central, 972-849. The Spartans bowled well but still fell to No. 7 Vanderbilt, 1,025-958, and then earned another victory over a ranked team, 963-932, against No. 12 New Jersey City.
Kutztown got a measure of revenge with a 4-2 victory in Baker play on Sunday in the bracket round. NSU posted a 4-0 sweep of Hampton to finish the tournament up.
NSU will attempt to wrap up its third MEAC Southern Division title in four years March 3-4 at the Southern Divisional in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Spartans own a 16-4 record in league play, with Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M tied for second at 12-8.
