Long Named MEAC Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Coming off a season-best performance, senior Whitney Long of the Norfolk State women's basketball team was named the MEAC Player of the Week on Monday afternoon by the conference office.

Long tallied 27 points in 31 minutes of play on Senior Day in an overtime victory against Delaware State, 78-73, scoring 25 in the second half alone to help the Spartans overcome a 20-point deficit. Long finished 10-of-21 from the floor after missing her first six shots, including 2-of-6 from beyond the arc and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Her scoring outburst marked the second-most points scored in a game in her career at NSU.

Long also tied her career high with seven steals and added two assists against the Hornets to help NSU improve to 10-14 overall, 5-8 in conference play. The Spartans have not reached double figures in wins since the 2004-05 season and now have more conference wins (5) as the previous four years combined (4).

On the year, the Raleigh, N.C., native ranks 11th in the conference and first on the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game and sixth in the league in 3-pointers made (1.6 per contest).

NSU will head to Florida to face Bethune-Cookman Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by a Monday evening contest at Florida A&M.
