NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Led by two victories from
Champagne Bell, the NSU women's track team accumulated 14 top-10 finishes on Saturday at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport.
Bell won the 400 meters (57.25 seconds) and the high jump (5 feet, 4.25 inches) to lead the way. While those were the only two wins for the Spartans, several other athletes turned in stellar performances. Freshman
Torie Cunningham ran her third-best time of the year with a clocking of 7.68 seconds in the 60 meters. She was the top collegiate finisher.
Pole vaulters
Katie Wright and
Tiara Davis both fared well. At the same location where she set her PR last winter (11-3.75), Wright cleared a season-best height of 11 feet, 0.25 inch and tied for third. Davis was sixth overall, clearing 10-0.5.
The Spartans also posted three top-10 finishes in distance races. Senior
Jamia Hutto and freshman
Kassandra Irizarry placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Hutto crossed the finish line in 11:04.69, and Irizarry clocked a time of 11:21.48.
Aside from Bell's win in the high jump, freshman
Kaydianne McKenzie notched a pair of top-10 finishes in field events. She was sixth in the long jump (17-2.75) and triple jump (36-7.5).
NSU returns to action next weekend at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas.
