Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T used a walk-off single for a 3-2 win in Game 1, but the Norfolk State softball team earned a split of the doubleheader with a 6-5 victory in Game 2 Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
Hope Fletcher's game-winning single off relief pitcher
Liz Riley in the bottom of the seventh completed the three-run comeback for the Aggies (5-13), who scored a run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Freshman
Robyn Mitchell hit an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh in the second game to break a 5-5 tie and prevent the Aggie sweep.
After pitching well but getting the no-decision in the first game, sophomore
Jamie Schulle earned the win in relief in Game 2 for NSU (8-6), allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Schulle (5-2) started the first game and allowed two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Freshman
Alina Moriarty went a combined 4-for-7 with one run and one RBI on the day, while junior
Gipsy Ramirez added two hits in Game 1 and freshman
Haley Ward did the same in the nightcap.
The Spartans jumped out ahead with two runs in the first inning to take the early lead in Game 2. Senior
Danielle Wright and Ward led off the game with a pair of hits, and Wright scored when third baseman Tranea Jones threw the ball away on a hit by senior
Whitney Holland. Moriarty singled to center to plate Ward, but Aggie starter Alexandria McAfee struck out catcher
Chelsea Davis to strand runners in scoring position.
The Aggies loaded the bases with three straight singles with two outs in the second, but after failing to capitalize on that opportunity, the Aggies did capitalize when they loaded the bases in the third. Sabrina Edmonds and Juanita Jernigan singled with one out, after Dominique Smith had reached on an error, to put runners on all three bases. Raven Smith singled to center to score the first two runs, and an error on Wright on the play allowed Jernigan to come across the plate as well.
NSU countered with three runs in the fourth to take the lead back, 5-3. Mitchell and Davis reached base to start the inning and one out later an error on Jernigan off a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Morgan Boyd allowed the two to cross the plate. Wright brought home Boyd from third in the next at bat, but the Aggies answered right back in the bottom of the fourth.
Zebresha Blakeney scored on a wild pitch after starting off the inning with a double to left center, and Jernigan's infield single a short time later tied it up at 5-5. After both teams got out of bases loaded jams in the fifth, Moriarty singled to right to start the seventh and advanced to third on an error on the right fielder. Mitchell followed with an RBI groundout, and Schulle got the Aggies to hit two straight groundouts to Holland with the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh to squash any hopes of an A&T comeback.
McAfee (0-5) gave up six runs, but just two earned, on eight hits in all seven innings in the loss.
Wright singled with one out in the top of the first in Game 1, and back-to-back singles by Holland and Ramirez put NSU on the board first to start the day. Mitchell smacked a one-out double in the fourth to bring home Ramirez, but the Aggies began to chip away at the lead in the fifth.
Edmonds' solo homer got A&T on the board in that fifth frame, and Dominique Smith followed with a homer to right field in the sixth to tie it up at 2-2. Detavia Kenan doubled to lead off the seventh and went to third on a hit off the bat of Tiffany Macklin. Fletcher then singled to right off Riley to end NSU's five-game win streak.
Riley suffered the loss, dropping her record to 3-4 on the year, after allowing one earned run on four hits in one total inning. Ashira Dobison (5-8) scattered eight hits in seven innings for the win.
The Spartans will head to Delaware to take part in the Delaware Invitational Friday through Sunday before hosting Central Connecticut State Monday and Tuesday at the NSU Softball Field.
