NORFOLK, Va. – Thanks to personal-best performances by long jumpers
Champagne Bell and
Kaydianne McKenzie, the NSU women's track team enjoyed a strong all-around performance at its own NSU College Relays on Saturday at Dick Price Stadium.
The meet was the first collegiate competition at Dick Price Stadium since NSU renovated its track surface in the summer of 2010. The Spartans took advantage of the new track and good weather conditions to post a number of PR performances on Saturday.
Bell led the way by winning the long jump with a best effort of 20 feet, 4.25 inches. Freshman McKenzie, who normally specializes in the triple jump, leapt a personal-best 18-7.75 to earn fifth place.
In other field events,
Katie Wright and
Tiara Davis both cleared 10 feet in the pole vault. They were the only two competitors in the event.
On the track, freshman
Torie Cunningham posted season-bests in both the 100 and 200 meters. She clocked a time of 11.90 seconds to place sixth in the 100, then PR'ed in the 200 with a time of 24.35 for an eighth-place finish. Teammate
Shanneka Claiborne was seventh in the 200 with a time of 24.33.
Elsewhere,
Jamia Hutto placed fourth in the 1,500 meters (5:07.72) and NSU's 4x400 relay team of Bell, McKenzie,
Ashley Sessoms and
Alicea Teamer was fourth (4:00.02).
NSU also recognized its seniors on Saturday (Wright, Claiborne, Hutto and
Syeeda Gee) and members of the 2011 MEAC outdoor championship team received their championship rings.
The Spartans return to competition next Saturday at Morgan State's Legacy Meet.
