Armstead Carries NSU to Saturday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Norfolk State volleyball team rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to down Providence, 3-1, after dropping a 3-1 contest to Robert Morris Saturday morning during the second day of the Robert Morris/Duquesne Invitational at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Senior Charlotte Armstead had a big day to lead the Spartans, tallying 19 kills in the first match and then 22 against Providence. In that latter match, Armstead committed just one attack error in 35 swings, a .600 attack percentage. Fellow senior Beatriz Ferreira hit .462 with 14 kills to help NSU improve its record to 2-5 on the season.

NSU defeated Providence, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15, 25-23, after earlier falling to Robert Morris, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 16-25. The Colonials improved their record to 1-4, while the Friars fell to 1-7.

Freshman setter Darcy Moore totaled 87 assists over the course of the day, while redshirt sophomore Noelle Eagles added 19 and 21 digs, respectively, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior Coralie Jarema contributed 10 kills, nine digs and five blocks against Robert Morris and then 12 digs, eight kills and three blocks against Providence.

After hitting just .084 against Robert Morris, the Spartans attacked at a .267 clip in the win over the Friars, jumping out to a 9-4 lead to start the match. After the teams went back and forth, a 6-1 run for the Spartans, highlighted by three kills by Armstead, gave NSU a 20-10 lead. The Friars held on for a short time before Jarema laid down the last kill of the set.

Providence responded with a 13-5 run to start the second set and later extended it to 17-8. Ferreira and Armstead each added a pair of kills as NSU chipped away at the lead. Jarema and junior Goda Jankauskaite got NSU to within four, 22-18, with a block of a Providence attack, but the Friars quickly ended the set after that.

Providence called timeout after NSU held a 7-3 lead in the third stanza, and a little later a service ace from sophomore Adriana Ramos made it 11-5. Armstead's service ace made it 17-10, and then a 5-0 run gave NSU a 22-11 lead that NSU turned into a 25-15 win.

In the fourth, a wild start found NSU up 9-7, but an 8-0 run by the Friars gave them a 15-9 lead. The Spartans went on a 5-0 run and then a pair of 4-0 runs, with Armstead contributing five kills during that time. Up 22-20, NSU used another kill from Armstead and two from Ferreira to put the match away.

NSU had an 8-4 advantage in service aces, while the duo of Mackenzie Ziegler and Colleen McCollom had 13 and 12 kills, respectively, to lead Providence.

Up 5-1 against Robert Morris earlier in the day, NSU stretched it to 10-5 thanks to some Colonial errors, although they did cut the Spartan deficit to one, 11-10. NSU pushed the lead back up to five, 16-11, but a 7-2 run gave Robert Morris a 22-21 lead. Ferreria, Jarema and Jankauskaite each threw down kills after that point to give NSU the first-set win.

Robert Morris, though, took an 11-2 lead to start the second and held on after NSU went on a 7-1 run right after that. Freshman Jessica Johnson added a pair of kills as NSU climbed back into the match, eventually tying it up at 18-18. Back-to-back kills from Jarema gave NSU a 22-21 lead, but the Colonials scored the last four points of the set.

The Spartans fought back from an early 5-0 deficit in the third set, using a 6-2 run to tie it up at 14-14. Robert Morris had NSU at set point, 24-19, before a pair of blocks by Jarema and Armstead made things interesting at 24-23. Robert Morris, though, survived to win the third stanza and used a 13-1 run in the middle of the fourth set to pull away from the Spartans and take the match.

Lindsey Monger had 15 kills and 13 digs to lead Robert Morris, while Becky Jay had 10 blocks. The Colonials hit just .079 compared to .084 for the Spartans, but NSU had 14 more attack errors that negated its plus-16 advantage in kills.

NSU will open up its home season next weekend with the Spartan Classic. The Spartans will host UNC Wilmington, Stetson and Rutgers at Joseph Echols Hall Friday and Saturday.
