Box Score MUNCIE, Ind. – Majok Majok's dunk with one second left helped Ball State overcome a big second-half surge by the Norfolk State men's basketball team in a 62-61 victory over the Spartans Wednesday night at Worthen Arena.
NSU had been down by 12 with a little less than 12 minutes to go in the game before the Spartans went on a 20-3 run that lasted seven and a half minutes on the clock. Down by five at that point with 4:45 to go, the Cardinals came back to eventually take a one-point lead with 58 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Chris Bond.
The Spartans missed four straight shots over their next two possessions, in between a quick turnover on Ball State. Senior
Rob Johnson grabbed the offensive board on the last miss and got fouled by Bond a few seconds later, sending Johnson to the line.
But after he sank both charity stripe shots for a 61-60 Spartan lead with just five seconds left, the Cardinals quickly went right down the court, and Jesse Berry found Majok for the game-winning slam.
Berry was a big key in the Ball State offense, going for 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including a 5-of-7 mark from beyond the arc. Jauwan Scaife provided plenty more offense with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, which also included a 5-of-8 effort from 3-point land.
Ball State (6-6) hit 12-of-21 for the game from long range (57.1 percent) despite coming into the night hitting less than 29 percent for the season.
NSU (6-10) got nearly all its scoring from four different players, led by Johnson with 16 points and a team-high seven boards. Juniors
Malcolm Hawkins and
Pendarvis Williams added 15 and 14 points, respectively, while junior
Kievyn Lila-St. Rose scored in double figures for the first time in his career with 11 points.
The quartet scored all but five of NSU's points in the games.
Williams started off the game's scoring with a trey during NSU's first possession, but the Cardinals scored the next 11 points over a four-minute span. After Johnson cut the deficit to three at the 13:34 mark with another 3-pointer, Ball State used a 14-3 run that lasted almost nine minutes for a 25-11 lead.
A couple of baskets from Johnson turned things around for the Spartans and started a 12-4 run to end the half. Williams' fastbreak layup and a shot from long range by Lila-St. Rose in the last minute of play cut the Ball State lead to 29-23 at the break.
Hawkins cut the Cardinal lead early in the second half, but Ball State's spot-on 3-point shooting continued to torch NSU. A trey from Berry pushed the Cardinal lead to 12, 47-35, at the 11:42 mark, forcing an NSU timeout.
Williams then hit a jumper on the ensuing possession to ignite the late Spartan run.
Junior
Jamel Fuentes handed out nine assists for the Spartans, while Williams added four assists, four blocks, two steals and five rebounds. NSU held a 36-28 edge on the boards and out-blocked the Cardinals, 8-3.
The Spartans shot 24-of-56 for the game (42.9 percent), including an 8-of-18 mark from long range. Ball State fared slightly worse, connecting on 21-of-50 (42.0 percent).
NSU will play its first home game in 26 days when the Spartans host Navy Saturday at 5 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
