READING, Pa. – The No. 15 Norfolk State bowling team opened its season on Saturday by finishing 4-2 at the Kutztown Fall Baker Invitational at Berks Lanes.
NSU suffered a pair of losses to No. 10 St. Francis (Pa.) (832-659) and No. 12 Kutztown (795-693), but the Spartans did manage to come away with three wins against ranked teams. After opening their season with the setback against St. Francis, the Spartans defeated Cheney 703-470 and No. 17 St. Francis Brooklyn, 796-760.
A victory over No. 16 LIU Brooklyn, 785-684, was followed by the loss to host Kutztown. NSU capped off its tournament play with an upset of No. 11 Adelphi, 714-687.
Senior
Thea Aspiras earned a spot on the all-tournament team thanks to a Baker frame average of 19.7. She was one of six players to earn some sort of all-tournament nod along with Deanna DiRado of Kutztown, Brittney Hart of LIU Brooklyn and the trio of Ashley Howe, Sarah Ross and Christina Leid of St. Francis (Pa.).
NSU was one of three teams to go 4-2 on Saturday, with three teams finishing either 5-1 or 6-0. A total of 12 teams competed at the invitational on the first day. The Spartans did not compete in Sunday's team competition.
The only home meet of the year for the Spartans kicks off next Saturday with the two-day Hampton Roads Invitational. NSU will welcome a host of schools to the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake.
