BLACKSBURG, Va. – Thanks to third-round appearances by sophomores Robin Riethmueller and Dzmitry Zyhmantovich, the Norfolk State University men's tennis team wrapped up its fall tournament schedule with a stellar effort at the ITA Regional hosted by Virginia Tech.
Sophomore Robin Riethmueller was seeded No. 17-32 and received a bye in the opening round before claiming a 6-4, 6-4 win against Penn State's Daniel Kohan in the second round. Riethmueller went on to drop a tight decision to No. 5 seed Alexis Huegas of Virginia Commonwealth, 6-3, 7-6 (6), in the third round. Riethmueller served for the second set up 5-4, before dropping a close set in the tie-breaker.
Junior Daniel Grauel defeated Old Dominion's Keon Wiggemans, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round before suffering a 6-2, 6-4 loss to No. 17-32 seed Jordan Daigle of Virginia.
In the opening round, sophomore Dzmitry Zyhmantovich upended Liberty's Dillon Segur, 6-3, 6-3. Zyhmantovich then defeated VCU's Jean Baptiste Mateo by walkover due to injury, before falling to No. 3 seed Ryan Shane of Virginia, 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of competition. Shane was part of U.Va.'s national championship squad from the spring and was previously ranked as high as No. 22 in the country.
NSU only had one doubles team compete at the ITA Regional as Zyhmantovich and Riethmueller teamed and lost to UMBC's Daniel Gray and Alex Drean, 8-4.
"I am so proud of our players and they continue to show they can compete with the best players in the country," said head coach Nate Feldman. "We put two players in the third round of the ITA Regional for the first time in the Division I era. We also had a player seeded in the tournament for only the second time in the Division I era."
The Spartans will open the spring season on Jan. 14 in Williamsburg, Va., when they take on William & Mary.
