Williams leads NSU to 105-83 victory over Stillman

Box Score PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Led by a 32-point effort from senior Pendarvis Williams, the Norfolk State men's basketball team reached the 100-point plateau for the second time this year in a 105-83 victory over Stillman late Tuesday afternoon at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Williams had his second career 30-point game, and for the second time this year one of those performances helped the Spartans reach triple digits against a Division II foe, this time in the consolation bracket of the NIT Season Tip-Off. The Spartans won their third straight and improved to 5-2 on the year, while Stillman fell to 1-4.

Senior Brandon Goode added 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting with 11 rebounds and six blocks. Along with Williams, who hit 12-of-15 from the field, the duo helped the Spartans finish 41-of-66 overall, a 62.1 percent shooting clip. It marked the second time this season NSU shot better than 60 percent from the floor and had at least 40 field goals.

The other times came in the Spartans' 115-95 victory over Newberry on Nov. 13 at home.

Stillman got a pair of strong performances from Daniel Bryant and Justin Harris, who tallied 25 and 24 points, respectively. They combined for eight 3-pointers, as a 12-of-30 effort from beyond the arc for the Tigers kept the Spartans from pushing the final margin to 30.

Williams added seven rebounds and five assists, and after scoring 13 in the first half he came out and posted nine straight for NSU to open the second half. A pair of treys from Stillman allowed the Tigers to match the Spartans' scoring, but Goode hit a pair of buckets and a 3-point play by Williams made it 68-49 with 12:07 left.

The scoring pace rapidly increased in the latter stages of the game, as the teams began to go back and forth with very little time off the clock during each possession. A fastbreak slam by senior Riley Maye gave the Spartans a 20-point advantage at the 9-minute mark, and the Spartans went up by as much as 24 on a tip-in by junior Paulius Vinogradovas with 16 seconds left.

The Spartans outscored Stillman 59-53 in the second half and 62-26 in points in the paint for the game.

Maye scored 14 for NSU on 7-of-9 shooting, while redshirt senior Malcolm Hawkins also reached double figures with 10 points to go along with six boards.

The Spartans held a 45-26 advantage on the glass.

The Spartans scored 11 of the first 13 points of the game, and Goode had back-to-back baskets, the latter a 3-point play, for an 18-5 lead at the 13:22 mark. Maye had a layup and a 15-foot baseline jumper to push NSU's lead to 30-6 with more than 10 minutes still left to go in the half.

NSU held the Tigers to without a field goal for nine and a half minutes to push the advantage to 34-8, but a 15-4 run for Stillman over a six-minute span made it 38-23 with a little less than three minutes left in the first half. Bryant drained another 3-pointer – he had 13 points in the first half – late in the stanza, and a last-second dunk by Maye gave the Spartans a 46-30 lead at the break.

Redshirt junior Jamel Fuentes had nine assists on the day, as the Spartans finished with 25 helpers as a team. Senior Jordan Weathers totaled nine points and eight rebounds.

Stillman shot 27-of-71 (38.0 percent) for the game. The Spartans also finished the game 20-of-26 from the free throw line.

With six blocks, Goode now has 102 in his career, moving him into a tie for third with current assistant coach Larry Vickers in the all-time record book at NSU.

Following the Thanksgiving holiday, NSU will head to LIU Brooklyn to take on the Blackbirds Sunday at 2 p.m.
