Williams’ Heroics Lead Spartans to OT win Over BU

Box Score BOSTON, Mass.Pendarvis Williams scored the last six points of regulation and then sealed the comeback with some late free throws in overtime to give the Norfolk State men's basketball team an 86-82 victory over Boston University on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.

The Spartans found themselves down eight with less than two minutes to go in the second half. After a bucket from senior Malcolm Hawkins, Williams connected on a pull-up jumper from the right side and then stole the inbounds pass for another quick two points with a minute to go.

After BU's 3-point attempt came up empty, Williams drove down the left side of the lane and hit a floater from seven feet out right along the edge of the paint with just 9.6 seconds to go. A desperation 3-pointer from BU fell short at the buzzer, sending NSU to its first overtime game this year.

In the extra sesssion, Williams connected on a deep trey from the right key to give the Spartans the lead back, 72-70, with 2:13 on the clock after Travis Robinson had drained a trey for BU in the previous possession.

Senior Anell Alexis dropped in a 3-pointer from the right corner and added a pair of free throws for a five-point edge, 79-74, with 28.3 seconds left. Hawkins sank a pair from the free throw line, and Williams went 5-of-6 in the last 10 seconds to seal the victory for NSU (8-3).

Williams finished with 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Hawkins added 17 points, and Alexis finished with 16 points and seven boards.

John Papale led BU (6-5) with 18 points, all on 3-pointers, as the Terriers finished the day 13-of-28 from beyond the arc. They were hurt by 18 turnovers, compared to just eight for NSU, despite connecting on 28-of-51 for the game (54.9 percent).

The Spartans hit exactly 50 percent on the afternoon on 32-of-64 shooting, including 7-of-23 from the 3-point line.

Papale hit three treys early in the second half, at one point giving BU the lead back after the Spartans had gone into the break up by two. The teams went back and forth for a short time until NSU connected on three buckets in a little more than a minute for a 50-44 advantage.

A pair of free throws from junior LaTre'e Russell extended the lead to 52-44, but BU scored eight straight to tie it up. Cedric Hankerson's 3-point play put the Terriers in the lead, and Maurice Watson's drive to the hoop gave them a 60-57 edge. Papale hit a fastbreak trey for a 67-59 lead at the 2:00 mark, the last points of regulation for the Terriers.

Watson nearly had a triple-double for BU, tallying 16 points with 12 assists and eight rebounds. The Terriers held a 33-28 advantage on the glass.

NSU jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game as it took BU almost six minutes to hit its first field goal, a trey from Dom Morris. The Terriers scored 11 straight after that fast NSU start, and their first five buckets of the game all came from beyond the arc.

BU went up by six at 25-19 with 4:52 to go in the first half on a mid-range jumper from D.J. Irving. The Spartans responded with a 13-2 run, capped by a 3-point play from Hawkins, for a 32-27 advantage. A 3-pointer from Robinson cut the NSU lead to 32-30 going into the intermission.

Senior Brandon Goode added 10 points and nine rebounds for NSU. Williams and Hawkins each had four steals.

Robinson totaled 14 points for BU.
