Grauel, Zyhmantovich Earn MEAC Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Daniel Grauel was named the MEAC Player of the Week while freshman Dzmitry Zyhmantovich was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week for men's tennis, the conference office announced on Wednesday. This was Zyhmantovich's second consecutive MEAC Rookie of the Week honor.

NSU (3-3, 1-0) went 2-0 over the weekend. The Spartans defeated Christopher Newport, 6-1, on Feb. 8 at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, Va., and claimed a 4-3 victory over S.C. State on Feb. 9 at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va. This was S.C. State's first regular season conference loss since March 27, 2010, when the Bulldogs lost to FAMU.

With the match tied at 3-all, Grauel fought off three match points in the third set of his matchup with Jiri Stiburek at No. 5 singles, helping the Spartans edge the five-time defending MEAC men's champion Bulldogs. In the match against CNU, Grauel competed in the No. 5 singles position where he defeated Will Sloan, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 3 doubles slot, Grauel paired up with sophomore Shaheed Mourillon-Swift to take on CNU's Joey Manilla and Lloyd Luck. The match was abandoned at 6-6 because the Spartans had already won the doubles point.

Zyhmantovich competed at the No. 1 doubles position with junior Peter Ramstromer-Pello, where they suffered a 6-8 loss to S.C. State's Peteris Vinogradous and Marius Dragoi. Zyhmantovich also led off in the singles matches where defeated Vinograduous, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. In the match against CNU, he paired with Ramstromer-Pello at the No. 2 spot and captured an 8-5 win over the Captains' Will Sloan and Robbie Wagner. Zyhmantovich also won his singles matches against Kyle Tobin, 6-2, 6-2.

NSU will return to the courts on Feb. 16 to take on Liberty at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club and then they will travel to Williamsburg, Va., on Feb. 17 to take on William & Mary at the Millie West Tennis Facility.
