NORFOLK, Va. – Brandon Beans went 4-for-6 with two runs batted in and David Wiedeman was 3-for-5 with three RBI to help Navy take the rubber game of a three-game series from Norfolk State, 13-1, at Marty L. Miller Field on Saturday afternoon.
Navy (2-1) out-hit the Spartans 15-6. Tyon Ore and Mikey Bruno had two hits apiece.
The Midshipmen also got strong pitching from the quartet of Stephen Moore, Luke Gillingham, Sam Sorenson and Dallas Redden, who combined to limit NSU to one unearned run on six hits.
NSU broke on top first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Chase Kyriacou singled and stole second, then scored on a Navy error to give the Spartans the early advantage.
Navy tied it on Wiedeman's two-out RBI single in the top of the third. The Midshipmen then took control with a three-run, four-hit frame in the top of the fourth. Drew Hayes broke the tie with a two-run single, and Wiedeman knocked him in with another run-scoring single with two outs to make it 4-1 in Navy's favor.
The Midshipmen tacked on another run in the seventh, which again came with two outs. Wiedeman singled and later scored on a two-out base hit from Beans. An eight-run eighth, which included five Navy hits and three NSU errors, provided the final margin.
Gillingham (1-0) earned the win for the Midshipmen with three scoreless innings of relief. Moore allowed one unearned run in four innings to start the ballgame.
Richie Salter (0-1) took the loss for NSU, giving up four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings of work.
NSU returns to action next weekend when Rider University visits Marty L. Miller Field for a three-game set, Friday-Sunday. The teams are slated to play once each day starting at 1 p.m.
