BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior Aivah Parham had 14 points and two steals, but it was not enough as the Norfolk State women's basketball team fell to Morgan State, 57-48, on Monday Night at the Hill Field House.

NSU dropped to 1-8 in the MEAC and 3-17 overall. Morgan State improved to 4-5 in the conference and 7-15 overall.

Morgan State got on the board first with a layup by Simone Sampson with 19:21 to go in the first half.

Junior Rachel Gordon nailed a jumper with 12:01 left before halftime to cap a 10-8 run by the Spartans to knot the score at 10.

The Lady Bears responded with 13-4 run, which included back-to-back field goals from Whitney Southerland as Morgan State continued to lead NSU, 23-14, with 6:58 left in the first half. Southerland led the Lady Bears with 14 points.

Junior Kashay Barnes hit the jumper with 5:09 but the Spartans continued to trail Morgan State, 26-20.

Sabrina Montgomery's layup with 37 seconds left capped a 10-3 run for the Lady Bears to send them into halftime with a 36-23 lead over NSU.

The Spartans shot 29.0 (9-of-31) percent in the first half while Coppin State shot 50.0 (15-of-30) percent from the field.

NSU opened the second half with a 7-0 run to come within six as Morgan State continued to lead, 36-30, with 17:08 remaining in the game.

Southerland responded with a 3-pointer at the other end with 14:19 to go to give the Lady Bears a 44-30 lead over NSU. Morgan State shot 38.5 (5-of-13) from behind the arc on the night.

The Spartans made one final push with a 3-pointer from Ebony Brown that sparked a 12-2 run to bring NSU within four with 10:46 remaining in the game. The Spartans trailed Morgan State 46-42.

Tracey Carrington sealed the win for the Lady Bears as she made a layup on the other end to spark an 11-6 run to end the game with 6:56 on the clock.

Morgan State shot 38.5 (20-of-52) percent from the field. Aside from Southerland, Carrington was the only other Lady Bear to score in double-figures as she finished the night with 11 points and four rebounds.

The Spartans were held to just 26.8 (15-of-56) percent shooting on the night. Aside from Parham, two other NSU players scored in double-figures including Gordon, who finished the night with 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior Batavia Owens also tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Spartans return to action on Feb. 9 when they take on Delaware State at Joseph Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
