Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Visiting Norfolk State jumped out to a 4-0 third-inning lead, but host William & Mary roared back with 13 runs in its final six frames at bat to surge past the Spartans, 13-4, on Wednesday night at Plumeri Park.
NSU drops to 11-19 with the loss, while the Tribe improves to 22-13.
NSU was held without a hit by W&M starter Joseph Gaouette through the first two innings, but
Ryan Montgomery led off the third with a single for the Spartans' first hit. He later went to third on a two-out single by
Chase Kyriacou, who advanced to second on the outfielder's throw. Both players scored on a single to center field from first baseman
Zach Markel. The Spartans weren't done, as outfielder
Cameron Day followed with a two-run homer, his second round-tripper of the season, to give NSU a 4-0 advantage.
W&M began chipping away in the bottom of the third, as two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. Jonathan Sarty's RBI single and Brian Lee's sacrifice fly cut the Spartans' lead in half.
Four more walks from NSU pitchers and a sac fly by Sarty tied the score at 4-all in the bottom of the fourth.
The Tribe took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth against NSU reliever
Raymond Morton. Lee hit a two-run double and Ryan Williams knocked in two more with a single to put W&M ahead 8-4.
Charley Gould's RBI triple and Jackson Shaver's run-scoring single in the seventh pushed the margin to 10-4. Michael Katz (two-run double) and Gould (RBI single) knocked in three more runs for W&M in the eighth to account for the final score.
John Sheehan (2-2) earned the win with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Tribe. Morton (2-2) yielded three hits and four runs in one inning of work to take the loss. He walked three. Six Spartan pitchers combined to walk 13 W&M batters.
Markel, the reigning MEAC Baseball Co-Player of the Week, went 2-for-4, scored a run and had two RBI for the Spartans. He was the only Spartan with more than one hit, as NSU was out-hit 14-7. Day went 1-for-2 with his two-run homer, and also walked twice.
Katz and Williams both had three hits and two RBI for the Tribe. Gould and Lee had two hits and three RBI apiece.
