NORFOLK, Va. – Junior outfielder Cameron Day went a career-best 4-for-4 and just lacked a home run for the cycle as Norfolk State rallied for a 6-2 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Day singled twice, doubled, tripled and knocked in a pair of runs en route to a career-high four hits for the Spartans (13-20, 8-7 MEAC), who won their fourth straight weekend series by taking Sunday's rubber game against the Hawks (6-32, 3-12).
The game quickly turned into a pitchers' duel between NSU righty Justin Bhatti and UMES lefty Jordan Bone. Bhatti didn't allow a hit until Byron Campbell's infield single with one out in the top of the fourth inning.
Bhatti and Bone matched each other with scoreless innings through five frames before UMES got to Bhatti in the top of the sixth. Stephen Bull led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on a Spartan error. A sacrifice bunt by Tre-von Johnson moved Bull to third, and Campbell's two-out RBI double broke the scoreless deadlock. Two batters later, Brandon Schott's single plated Campbell to push the Hawks' lead to 2-0.
NSU answered back in the bottom of the sixth. Justin Lee led off with a single, and after a fielder's choice, another single by Zach Markel put runners on the corners. Day followed with an RBI single to cut the Spartans' deficit in half. Kyle Vaas then drew a walk to load the bases with one out, which led to Bone being lifted in favor of reliever Bernard Parker. Parker held the lead by retiring the next two hitters on grounders.
But the Spartans broke through in a big way against Parker in the bottom of the seventh. Killian Strenn led off with a single, and pinch hitter Robert Depp drew a walk. Lee sacrificed Strenn to third and pinch runner Andre Moore to second. Pinch hitter Cody Ellis' sacrifice fly scored Strenn to tie the game, and Moore subsequently scored on a wild pitch by Parker to give NSU its first lead of the game.
NSU wasn't done. Markel reached on his second base hit of the day, and Day followed by slamming a long triple off the wall in left, plating Markel to extend NSU's lead to 4-2. The Spartans added two more insurance runs in the sixth on Lee's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Mikey Bruno.
Raymond Morton (3-2) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief for NSU. He allowed just one hit and struck out one batter. Bhatti took a no-decision, striking out a season-high nine hitters in six innings. He yielded just four hits and two runs, and walked three.
Parker (2-3) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up three hits and three runs in 1.1 innings of work.
Markel, Lee and Strenn had two hits each for NSU, which out-hit the Hawks 11-5. Strenn scored a pair of runs.
Campbell was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for UMES.
The Spartans are off until next weekend, when they host Coppin State for a three-game MEAC series on Saturday and Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.
