Spartans Cap Penn Relays with 2 Championship of America Appearances

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Norfolk State track and field teams capped their weekend at the 2013 Penn Relays by making a pair of appearances in Championship of America relay finals on Saturday.

The Spartan women's 4x200 meter relay team placed sixth in its final. The team of Torie Cunningham, Rayiana Johnson, Champagne Bell and Brittney McCants posted a time of 1 minute, 34.03 seconds. That was more than a second faster than the Spartans' preliminary time, which also qualified NSU as the sixth-fastest time.

The Spartan men's 4x100 meter team also put together a solid race. NSU grouping of Keith Nkrumah, James Taylor, Damian Smith and Kenneth Smith ran a time of 40.34 seconds, which would have been the Spartans' fastest time of the season. But NSU was later disqualified for an early baton exchange, which was appealed but rejected.

After a successful weekend for both teams, NSU now turns its attention to next week's MEAC Outdoor Championship, which run May 2-4 on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
