Final Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Led by freshman
Kiara Howell and the gold medal-winning 4x100 meter relay team, the Spartan women's track and field team finished in fifth place at the 2013 MEAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
Hampton won the title with 123 points. UMES was close behind with 119, followed by Florida A&M in third with 104. Coppin State was fourth with 72 points and NSU tallied 62.
Howell tied Morgan State's Ranita Mealer for the women's Most Outstanding Field Athlete award at the 2013 championship. The freshman thrower was second on Saturday in the javelin with a best throw of 114 feet, 11 inches. Howell was also second in the discus Thursday and came in fifth in Friday's shot put, contributing 20 points to NSU's total.
NSU's top highlight on the track Saturday came via a stellar effort from its 4x100 meter relay team. The quartet of
Champagne Bell,
Torie Cunningham,
Brittney McCants and
Qua'Nesha Wallace posted a season-best time of 45.12 seconds to take the gold medal.
Sophomore
Tiara Davis and freshman
Jazmine Vaughan also fared well Saturday, topping their previous personal bests in their respective events. Davis cleared 10 feet, 9.5 inches to finish second in the pole vault. Vaughan posted a time of 14.29 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles, earning a fifth-place finish. Her previous PR was 14.48 from Friday's semifinals.
Several Spartans are in line to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round later this month, including Bell in the long jump, Cunningham and McCants in the 100 meters, and possibly the 4x100 relay team.
