UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Norfolk State women's track team posted nine top-10 finishes Saturday at the Penn State Relays as the Spartans returned to competition following a month off for the semester and holiday break.
Junior sprinter
Qua'Nesha Wallace accounted for two of those top-10 finishes. She just missed her personal-best time in the 60-meter dash, placing third in 7.51 seconds. She ran a PR of 7.50 last month at CNU. Wallace also crossed the finish line ninth in the 200 meters at Penn State, registering a time of 25.68 seconds.
Jazmine Vaughan (sixth in the 60m hurdles),
Ra'Shaun Combs (seventh in the 1,000 meters) and the 4x400 relay team of Combs,
Champagne Bell,
Justice Briscoe and
Rayiana Johnson (eighth place) also recorded top-10 finishes on the track on Saturday.
The Spartans also had four top-10 efforts in field events. Sophomore
Kiara Howell came in third place in the shot put with a top throw of 46 feet, 10.75 inches. She also finished 10th in the weight throw (46-8.25).
Bell notched a top long jump of 18-1 in her first meet competing in her specialty this academic year. That was good for fourth place. In addition, sophomore
Kaydianne McKenzie took fifth place in the triple jump (37-8.5).
The Penn State Relays began a busy month for the NSU women. Counting the PSU meet, the Spartans are in action three straight weeks, continuing this weekend as the squad will be split between the Hampton University Invitational and the Joe Hilton Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina.
