Rachel Gordon Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – For the fourth time this season, Norfolk State senior forward Rachel Gordon was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Gordon posted double-doubles in both games last week as she led the Spartans with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the 57-48 win over Delaware State on Monday. She also tallied 14 points and 16 rebounds in the 61-52 win over Morgan State on Saturday. Gordon now has eight double-doubles on the season. Free throw shooting played a major part in Gordon's scoring effort as she shot 88.5 percent (23-of-26) from the charity strike.

Gordon, who ranks first in the MEAC and seventh in the nation in rebounding, is in fifth place all-time in career rebounding at NSU with 924 boards. She needs 77 more rebounds to pass Sharon Wallace for first place, which means she needs to average 7.0 boards over the next 11 games.

The Spartans take on Coppin State on Jan. 20. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. in Joseph Echols Hall.
