NORFOLK, Va. – Junior
Torie Cunningham's victory in the 60 meter dash highlighted a bevy of top-five finishes for the Spartan women's track and field team over the weekend at the Joe Hilton Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina, while
Tiara Davis claimed a win in the pole vault at the Hampton Invitational.
The majority of the Spartan women's team competed at UNC, while a small contingent of mostly field athletes and distance runners traveled across the water to the Hampton Invitational.
At UNC, Cunningham posted a time of 7.79 seconds in the final to claim victory. Junior
Desmonae Gray, in her first meet as a Spartan, placed fourth in 8.08 seconds, one of her three top-five finishes on the day.
Qua'Nesha Wallace,
Champagne Bell and
Adugna Desalegn also had runner-up finishes. Wallace was second in the 200m (26.32), Bell was second in both the 400m (59.89) and long jump (18-3.75), and Desalegn was runner-up in the 3,000m (11:05.28).
Gray was fifth in both the 60m hurdles (9.06) and long jump (17-4).
At Hampton, Davis cleared a top height of 10 feet, 3.5 inches to win the title. Teammate
Te'Shaibrah Myles was third in the same event (8-8).
The Spartans will compete at the Hokie Invitational at Virginia Tech this weekend.
