Spartans Fall to Miami, 64-49

Box Score CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Norfolk State men's basketball team was held to a season low for points in a 64-49 loss to the University of Miami Saturday afternoon at the BankUnited Center.

The Hurricanes had four different players score in double figures and went just seven-deep. Senior Pendarvis Williams posted a 21-point effort for NSU, which was also without leading scorer Malcolm Hawkins on the afternoon.

Senior Brandon Goode had a solid outing as well for NSU with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with seven rebounds. Williams and Goode combined for 35 of the team's 49 points.

The Spartans fell to 12-10 on the year following their last non-conference game of the year, while Miami improved to 11-10.

Team leading scorer Rion Brown added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Hurricanes, with Manu Lecomte (13 points), Garrius Adams (12) and Donnavan Kirk (10) also reaching double figures.

Adams also grabbed 10 rebounds, helping Miami finish with a 39-29 edge on the boards.

The Hurricanes controlled the offensive glass early on and hit several 3-pointers for a 15-8 lead to start the game. Williams scored the last seven points of a 9-0 NSU run, the last two after a nice crossover from just inside the arc. That gave the Spartans their only lead of the game, 19-18.

Miami, though, scored the next six points, part of a 13-2 run to close out the half.

The Hurricanes had a 20-11 edge on the boards and held NSU to just 7-of-21 shooting in the first half for a 31-21 lead over the Spartans.

The Hurricanes scored the first 12 points of the second half, holding NSU scoreless for nearly six minutes. The Spartans responded with an 8-1 run that lasted less than two minutes. Goode scored the last two points of that run and eight of 10 for the Spartans during a four-minute stretch. NSU got to within 10, 50-40, on a floater in the lane from Williams with 6:31 left.

Brown responded with a trey on the next possession, and Miami led by at least 12 the rest of the way.

NSU hit 18-of-56 (32.1 percent) from the floor on the afternoon and committed just nine turnovers.

Miami connected on 18-of-43 (41.9 percent), including 8-of-22 from beyond the arc.

The Spartans will wrap up their four-game road swing at Morgan State next Saturday at 4 p.m.
