LANDOVER, Md. –
Adugna Desalegn's second-place finish in the 5,000 meters highlighted day one action for the Norfolk State women's track team at the 2014 MEAC Indoor Championships on Friday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Spartans ended the opening day in fourth place, with 27 points. Hampton leads with 56 points, Florida A&M is second with 43 and Morgan State is in third with 41. Desalegn completed her race in 18 minutes, 39.65 seconds. That topped her previous season-best by some 49 seconds, and trailed only Ishakeema Swain of Morgan State (18:23.04). NSU's
Fiona Masai and
Rachel Webb were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 5,000 meters.
NSU's other top finish on Friday was
Champagne Bell's third-place effort in the long jump. Her top leap was 19 feet, but she did have her streak of three straight MEAC indoor titles snapped.
Also Friday, the Spartans' distance medley relay team of Webb, Bell,
Ra'Shaun Combs and Masai came in fifth.
De'Andra Doyle and
Kiara Howell were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the weight throw.
In Friday's prelims,
Qua'Nesha Wallace won her heat and was the third-fastest qualifier in the 60 meters. She tied her PR of 7.50 seconds. In the 60 meter hurdles,
Jazmine Vaughan (8.80) and
Desmonae Gray (8.82) qualified for Saturday's event final.
The final day of competition gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday with the women's pentathlon.
