Howell's Top 10 Finishes Help NSU Women Open Outdoor Season Strong

– Sophomore Kiara Howell placed in the top 10 in all three of her throwing events as the Norfolk State women's track and field team opened its 2014 outdoor season this past weekend at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.

Howell accounted for three of the eight top-10 finishes posted by the Spartan women over the weekend. She was second in the shot put (44 feet, 2.75 inches), fourth in the discus (139-10) and 10th in the javelin (120-10).

Sophomore Rachel Webb had the next-best finish for a Spartan in an individual event. She took fourth placed in the 5,000 meters in a time of 18 minutes, 30.43 seconds. Junior Fiona Masai was 10th in the same event (19:19.93).

In other field events, De'Andra Doyle came in eighth in the discus (130-8) and Tiara Davis was 10th in the pole vault (10 feet).
The 4x200 team fared the best of the Spartans' relay teams entered in the meet. The grouping of Torie Cunningham, Champagne Bell, Rayiana Johnson and Brittney McCants was third in a time of 1:41.74.

The Spartans are back in action this Saturday as they take part in the Virginia Cup in Charlottesville, Va.
