Savannah State Salvages Series Split with Sunday Sweep of Spartans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Visiting Savannah State bounced back from being swept Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader of its own from Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Tigers (5-7) took game 1 by a 5-3 score, then won the nightcap 4-1.

In the opener, Tre Sikes doubled twice, scored a run and knocked in another for SSU.

Zach Markel was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI in the first game. His RBI double off the right-field wall gave the Spartans (3-8) a 1-0 lead in the first, but SSU answered with two unearned runs without benefit of a hit in the second. Sikes' RBI double and Zachary Brigham's run-scoring groundout pushed the lead to 4-1 in the third.

Ian Farris tacked on an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-1 for the Tigers. The Spartans cut their deficit in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Andre' Moore and Justin Lee hit back-to-back singles, and Moore scored on a groundout by Robert Barefoot. Markel then singled Lee home to make it 5-3.

But SSU relievers Ryan McCranie and Eric Ricks held NSU scoreless in the sixth and seventh, respectively, to preserve the Tigers' win.

Zach McCormack (1-0) earned the win for the Tigers, allowing seven hits and three runs in five innings. Ricks picked up his first save. Cooper Jones (0-1) took the loss for NSU, allowing five runs (three earned) in three innings of work. Stephen Butt worked four scoreless innings in relief for the Spartans.

SSU gained the early lead in the nightcap on Kevin Herlihy's two-out RBI single in the top of the second inning. NSU tied it in the bottom of the third. Moore led off with a triple to deep center. Lee, the next batter, fouled out well into foul territory up the first-base line. Moore tagged up and bluffed like he was going to come home, drawing a throw to the plate. The throw sailed over the catcher's head, allowing Moore to score and tie the score at 1-all.

But the Tigers regained the advantage in the top of the fifth on Brian Miller's two-out, two-run double and added insurance on Aaron Hoffer's RBI single in the sixth.

Austin Denney earned the win for SSU in the nightcap, pitching five innings and allowing just one unearned run. Devin Hemmerich (0-2) took the loss for the Spartans, yielding two runs (one earned) in four innings.

Moore was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Markel was 2-for-4 with two walks and a pair of RBI on the afternoon.

The Spartans are off until they host Canisius for a four-game series next Friday through Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.
