Spartans Go 4-1, Sit in 4th after MEAC Qualifying Rounds

CHESAPEAKE, Va.
– The No. 19 Norfolk State bowling team ended the day in fourth place with a 4-1 overall record following the qualifying rounds of the 2014 MEAC Championship on Friday at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake.

The Spartans had the second-best record of the day behind UMES at 5-0, but NSU came in fourth out of the eight teams in the tournament with its 4,574 total pin fall.

Action now turns to Baker play on Saturday, where No. 4 NSU will take on No. 5 Bethune-Cookman in the double-elimination bracket portion of the championship. Each match will consist of a best-of-seven Baker series. Play begins at 8:30 a.m.

Senior Thea Aspiras, named to the all-conference first team earlier in the day, finished Friday's round with a 204.8 average in five games, second overall in the tournament behind Delaware State's Courtney Davis (205.6).

Junior Courtney Brown tallied a 182.2 average, while freshman Nicole Rivera Santiago posted a 180.2 average in five games as well. Juniors Kelsea Yarbrough, at 177.8, and Delilah Bethel, at 169.8, rounded out the contingent of Spartan bowlers who competed on the day.

Delaware State finished just ahead of NSU in third with 4,590 pins, while UMES (4,834) and North Carolina A&T (4,636) ended the afternoon first and second.

Florida A&M, Morgan State and Coppin State rounded out the rest of the standings after day 1.
