CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –
Desmonae Gray won the triple jump to highlight a quintet first-place finishes for the Norfolk State women's track and field team at the Joe Hilton Invitational hosted by UNC last weekend.
Gray posted a top leap of 40 feet, 1.25 inches, her best mark of the year in either indoor or outdoor competition. The mark is also the third-best in the MEAC so far this season.
Gray's victory was one of six wins Saturday for the Spartan women, who posted a number of season-best performances. Sophomore
Kiara Howell was fourth in the shot put with a top throw of 46-4.25, her best of the season and the best for any MEAC athlete. Junior
Kaydianne McKenzie leaped a season-best 39-3.25 to finish third in the triple jump. That is No. 4 in the MEAC this season.
On the track,
Brittney McCants (11.92) and
Justice Briscoe (25.56) also posted season-best times in winning the 100 and 200 meters, respectively.
Jazmine Vaughan (1:07.62) won gold in the 400 hurdles and Gray was third in the 100 meter hurdles, clocking a college PR of 14.20 in the finals.
Fiona Masai had the top finish for a distance runner with her 11th-place effort in the 3,000 meters (10:48.51).
Though NSU had the only 4x100 meter relay team entered in the meet, the quartet of McCants, McKenzie,
Champagne Bell and
Rayiana Johnson posted a season-best time of 47.04 seconds.
The Spartans are back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore, Md.
