Dzmitry Zyhmantovich Named MEAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year

NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Dzmitry Zyhmantovich was named the MEAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, while three other Spartans were also named to the All-MEAC teams, the league announced on Wednesday.

Zyhmantovich, along with senior Peter Ramstromer-Pello, earned a spot on the All-MEAC first team. Junior Daniel Grauel and sophomore Robin Riethmueller were both named to the All-MEAC second team.

This is the first time NSU has placed four players on the All-MEAC teams.

A native of Minsk, Belarus, Zyhmantovich closed out the spring season with a 13-4 singles record, which included a 4-0 mark in league play. Zyhmantovich, NSU's second-ever MEAC Player of the Year and first since Miroslav Vleck in 2008, also had a 12-4 mark at the No. 1 spot. Zyhmantovich teamed up with Ramstromer-Pello in doubles play, where they finished 7-5 overall and 3-0 in league play. Zyhmantovich earned the MEAC Player of the Week award three times this season. He also claimed the MEAC Rookie of the Year award and a first-team all-conference nod last year.

Ramstromer-Pello (Halmstad, Sweden) sits at 11-6 in singles play, including a 3-1 record in the MEAC. He competed mainly at the No. 4 position, where he finished the regular season 6-4.

Grauel, a native of Munich, Germany, was 10-6 on the season in singles competition, which included a 3-1 mark in conference play. He was also 2-1 in the league and 6-7 overall in doubles matches. Grauel earned MEAC Player of the Week honors this season on Feb. 26.

Riethmueller (Balingen, Germany) finished the regular season 10-5 in singles play, including a 2-2 MEAC record. He closed out the season on a three-match win streak, which included wins over Georgetown, Longwood and James Madison. Riethmueller paired up with junior Igor Braga in the doubles competition, where they posted an 8-4 overall mark.

Howard's Ismael Kaouache was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year, while Coppin State's Diwani Lewis was named the MEAC Coach of the Year.

The men's tennis team also placed six members on the 2014 MEAC Tennis All-Academic Team. Zyhmantovich, Ramstromer-Pello, Grauel, Riethmueller, Braga and senior Kent Austin each earned the academic honor. MEAC sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year are eligible for All-Academic accolades.

NSU (12-6, 3-1) earned the southern division's No. 2 seed in the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.  The Spartans will face Coppin State, the northern division's No. 3 seed, in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at noon.
