Complete Match ResultsCAYCE, S.C. – Norfolk State, the MEAC south No. 2 seed, suffered a 4-1 loss to South Carolina State, the southern division's No. 1 seed, in the finals of the 2014 MEAC Men's Tennis Championship at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center on Sunday evening.
The win gave the Bulldogs the MEAC title for the seventh consecutive year. The Spartans finished the season 14-7 overall and the 14 wins is the most by the program since 2007, when the Spartans went 14-6.
Junior
Pascal Domnik picked up NSU's only win in singles play. He competed at the No. 2 spot, where he topped Jiri Stiburek, 6-2, 6-1. Domnik closed out the season with a 4-0 mark.
S.C. State opened the match by taking the doubles point in the first two spots. Sophomore
Dzmitry Zyhmantovich and senior
Peter Ramstromer-Pello played in the No. 1 position, where they suffered an 8-3 loss to Stiburek and Martin Kobza. With the loss, Zyhmantovich and Ramstromer-Pello end the season with a 7-6 record. Sophomore
Robin Riethmueller and junior
Igor Braga dropped to 8-5 overall after falling to Daniel Vala and Martin Figura, 8-3, in the No. 2 slot. The third match featuring Domnik and junior
Daniel Grauel was abandoned after the Bulldogs clinched the point.
The Bulldogs also posted wins in the singles competition at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, with two of those matches going to three sets. Soufiane Mouline upended Braga 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Braga closed out the season with a 9-9 singles record. In the No. 5 spot, Vala posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ramstromer-Pello. Ramstromer-Pello, one of two seniors on the team, ends the year with a 12-7 mark and earned first-team all-conference honors. Rounding out the wins for S.C. State was Figura. He topped All-MEAC second-teamer Grauel in the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Figura's win gave SCSU the fourth and clinching point.
The No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches were abandoned after S.C. State won the match. Zyhmantovich competed against Kobza in the No. 1 spot. Zyhmantovich was named the MEAC Player of the Year and finished the season 14-4 overall. He also made the All-MEAC first team. Riethmueller and Baco faced-off in the No. 3 spot. Riethmueller closed out the season with an 11-5 mark and was an All-MEAC second team selection.
S.C. State's win gives the Bulldogs the automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship that will take place May 15-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
