Bell, Gray Win Event Titles at Colonial Relays

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. Champagne Bell won the long jump championship section and Desmonae Gray won the university section of the triple jump for the NSU women's track and field team over the weekend at the Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William & Mary.

In her first time competing in the long jump this outdoor season, Bell had a top mark of 19 feet to win the top section of the event. Gray, also in her first outdoor meet competing in the triple jump, notched a best mark of 37 feet, 6.75 inches to win the university section.

Those two led a strong effort by the Spartans' field athletes at the meet. For the third straight meet, Kiara Howell posted multiple top-10 finishes in the throwing events. She placed third in both the shot put (44-4) and discus (149-7), recording season-best marks in both events. She was also 10th in the javelin, with a top throw of 126-7. Howell continues to be the top-ranked discus thrower in the MEAC.

Kaydianne McKenzie competed in the championship section of the triple jump, where she came in fifth with a top mark of 38-1.5. Also, Tiara Davis was tied for seventh place in the pole vault (10-2).

On the track, the 4x100 meter relay team of Bell, Rayiana Johnson, Torie Cunningham and Brittney McCants placed second with a time of 47.08 seconds. The 4x400 team of Johnson, Bell, McKenzie and Justice Briscoe ran a season-best time of 3:55.32 to finish 11th.

Elsewhere, McCants took sixth place in the 100 meters (12.04). Fiona Masai, competing in the steeplechase for the first time this spring, took eighth place with a time of 11:23.80, the second-best in the conference this outdoor season.

Also, Rachel Webb claimed ninth place in the 1,500 meters with a season-best time of 4:53.46.

The Spartans compete this Friday and Saturday at the Joe Hilton Invitational at the University of North Carolina.
