Day 2 ResultsGREENSBORO, N.C. – Thanks to a trio of top-five finishes in the field events, the Norfolk State women's track and field team moved up to third place in the standings at the MEAC Outdoor Championships on Friday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
Florida A&M leads the women's competition with 48 points, followed by Bethune-Cookman with 44 and NSU with 32.
Senior
Champagne Bell took second place in the long jump to post the Spartans' best finish of the day. Bell's best jump was 19 feet, 6.25 inches, which trailed only Florida A&M's Nakia Linson (19-9). Her mark of 19-6.25 was her best this outdoor season. In her career, Bell won two MEAC outdoor long jump titles and placed second in her other two conference outdoor meets.
Also in the long jump, sophomore
Desmonae Gray took fifth with a season-best jump of 18-11.75.
Sophomore
Kiara Howell nabbed six more points for the Spartans with a third-place finish in the shot put. Howell's best throw was 46-6, which narrowly trailed Morgan State's Ranita Mealer (46-11) and Bethune-Cookman's Desiree Richardson (46-6.25).
The Spartans advanced one runner from Friday's preliminary races to Saturday's finals. Junior
Brittney McCants qualified sixth overall and fourth in her heat in the 100-meter dash. Her time of 11.67 seconds is a season best.
The third and final day of competition begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the pole vault competition, followed by the javelin and triple jump. The running finals begin at 1 p.m. Live results are available through
