RICHMOND, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team won several games but was unable to get over the hump in a 5-0 loss to Georgetown on Friday afternoon during the first day of the VCU 4-1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The No. 2 and 3 singles matches proved to be the most competitive for the Spartans (0-2). At the second position, senior
Yvonne Kamegne fell by a 6-3, 6-4 score to Sophia Barnard. The scores were reversed at the third spot, as Georgetown's Sophie Panarese knocked off senior
Krystal Scott, 6-4, 6-3.
At the No. 1 position, sophomore
Liza Gordeeva fell by a 6-2, 6-0 score to Victoire Saperstein. In the lone doubles match of the contest, senior
Mafalda Lhorca and junior
Andrea Macchiavello came up short by a 6-2, 6-2 score to Liselot Koenen and Madeline Foley.
Georgetown (2-0) also took the No. 4 singles match by default against short-handed NSU. The 4-1 format includes four singles matches and one doubles match, with players only competing in either singles or doubles.
The Spartans will take on host VCU Saturday at 3 p.m. on the second day of the invitational.
