NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Freshmen
Tyrika Lee and
Taejah Robertson made their Spartan debuts in style by claiming event victories on Saturday as the NSU women's track and field team opened its indoor season at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open.
Lee won the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.63 seconds and also placed second in the 60 meters (7.70 seconds). Robertson cruised to a win in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.80 seconds in the final.
Several other newcomers also performed well for the Spartans on Saturday. Freshman
Ashaila Bunch was third in the 60 hurdles in a time of 9.05 seconds. The all-newcomer quartet of junior college transfer
Nickheila John and freshmen
Chrystal Green,
Chazmin Fullwood and
Jermyiah Jones placed second in the 4x400 meter relay in 4 minutes, 2.24 seconds. Fullwood also took fifth in the 600 meters (1:38.67), and fellow rookie
Kayla Naylor finished fifth in the triple jump (34 feet, 6.25 inches).
Senior
Kiara Howell also notched a pair of top-five finishes. She placed second in the shot put (43-9.75) and fifth in the weight throw (44-4).
The Spartans are now off for the remainder of the semester and holiday break before returning to action on Jan. 8-9 at the Penn State Relays.
