Last Time OutKayla Roberts registered career highs of 26 points and 25 rebounds to lead the Norfolk State women's basketball team to its first win over rival Hampton in more than eight years, 71-66 in overtime before a season-high crowd of 2,496 at Echols Hall last Saturday.
Roberts outscored Hampton by herself in the OT, accounting for five of the Spartans' six points in the extra session. NSU (7-13, 6-3 MEAC), which snapped a 17-game losing streak to the Lady Pirates (10-11, 6-2), held Hampton without a field goal in the extra session.
Hampton guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas hit a free throw with 3:24 left in OT to give Hampton a 66-65 edge. Roberts answered with a layup 23 seconds later to give the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish. She then sealed it by going 2-of-2 from the line with 16 seconds left, giving NSU a four-point lead at 70-66.
The Lady Pirates, who shot 29.4 percent from the floor for the game, went 0-of-7 in the overtime.
Rae Corbo added 22 points for NSU.
Koryn Lawrence chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds. The Spartans outrebounded Hampton by a 56-51 margin and had 19 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds.

All five Lady Bison starters scored in double figures, led by 19 points from Cheyenne Brown. Imani Bailey had 18, Sydni Johnson and Victoria Gonzales had 17 apiece, and Jasmine Hill added 13. Howard forced UMES into 22 turnovers to help overcome a 54-34 deficit on the boards.

All-Time Series vs. HowardNSU is just 10-30 all-time against Howard, but the Spartans were victorious in the teams' last meeting, 79-74, on Feb. 24, 2014 at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. That broke Howard's 11-game winning streak in the series dating back to the 2007-08 season.
Momentous WinThe Spartans' win over Hampton last Saturday snapped NSU's 17-game losing streak to the Lady Pirates, dating to a 70-66 NSU win on Dec. 2, 2006. The win was also
Debra Clark's first over her alma mater since she took the helm of the program in 2009.
Fast MEAC StartAt 6-3 in the MEAC one game past the halfway point of the conference schedule, the Spartans are positioned for their best MEAC slate in years. Last year's 8-8 MEAC mark was the program's best – and first non-losing MEAC record – since the 2004-05 team went 9-9. NSU's last winning MEAC record came in the 2001-02 MEAC championship season (13-5). The program has reached as many as six MEAC victories just twice since the 2005-06 season (6-10 in 2011-12 and 8-8 in 2013-14).
