NSU Defeats Savannah State, Falls to FAMU

Florida A&M Match Results | Savannnah State Match Results

FLORENCE, S.C.
– Winning the doubles point proved to be the difference as the Florida A&M women's tennis team defeated Norfolk State, 4-3, on Sunday during the MEAC Southern Division Round-Up at the Florence Tennis Center. The Spartans were able to rebound later in the day and defeat Savannah State, 5-0.

FAMU and NSU split the six singles matches during their late morning contest. The Rattlers were able to pull out victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, though, accounting for the ultimate difference against the Spartans.

NSU cruised against the Tigers, though. Savannah State (2-10, 0-3 MEAC) was already in a hole after defaulting at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Senior Mafalda Lhorca and junior Andrea Macchiavello picked up the victory at No. 2 doubles, 8-0, over Jennyfer Vivas and Bria Burrows for the doubles point.

Freshman Dajana Cvjetkovic and sophomore Liza Gordeeva did not finish their No. 1 doubles match against Kamelia Dimitrova and Sandy Lochu.

Macchiavello and senior Krystal Scott each swept their opponents by 6-0, 6-0 scores in singles play. Scott earned that victory over Burrows at the fifth position, while Macchiavello did the same at No. 3 singles over Vivas.

The afternoon victory moved NSU to 4-6 overall, 2-1 in the MEAC and one step closer to earning a spot in the MEAC tournament for the first time in four years.

Senior Yvonne Kamegne also won in singles against Savannah State at the fourth slot, 6-2 and 6-1 against Tiffany Williams. Lhorca won by default at No. 6 singles, while Gordeeva was up at the No. 1 spot (6-3, 2-3) and Cvjetkovic was the same at No. 2 (6-3, 2-0) before their matches were called.

The Spartans came close to earning the victory earlier in the day against Florida A&M (3-7, 2-0) as well. The Rattlers won close victories in doubles for the early lead.

Symone Townsend and Elysia Ortiz won at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, over Cvjetkovic and Gordeeva. Also at the third slot, Alexis Dean and Dominique Henry downed Scott and Kamegne, 8-5. Macchiavello and Lhorca were tied at 7-7 with Arrice Robinson and Shantal Blackwood at the second position before the match was called.

Cvjetkovic had to overcome an early deficit at the No. 1 singles position. She fell in the first set, 6-3, to Dean before winning the next two by 6-2 and 6-1 scores. Gordeeva had a much easier time at the second singles slot, defeating Townsend, 6-0 and 6-1.

Lhorca also won to keep the final score close. She took the tiebreaker, 7-5, for the 7-6 win in the first set over Ortiz. Lhorca then earned the win in the second set in a little easier fashion, 6-2.

Henry's comeback win at No. 4 singles also was instrumental in FAMU earning the match victory. She began, though, by falling to Kamegne by a 6-1 score in the first set. Henry rebounded to win via scores of 6-4 and 6-1 in the next two sets.

In the other singles matches, Macchiavello fell to Blackwood, 6-4 and 7-5, at the No. 3 position, while Scott dropped a 6-0, 6-3 contest to Robinson at the fifth spot.

The Spartans will take on Bethune-Cookman on Monday at 10 a.m. during the second day of the round-up.
