Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood scored seven runs in the sixth inning to help the homestanding Lancers surge past Norfolk State, 13-7, on Tuesday evening at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
Â
NSU (4-8) held a 2-0 lead after three innings, but couldn't keep a potent Longwood (7-11) offense at bay. The Lancers scored a total of 12 runs in the middle three innings to overtake NSU.
Â
Robert Depp hit a pinch-hit two-run home run, the first round-tripper of the year for the Spartans, in the losing effort.
Â
NSU took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by
Angel Rosario. That brought home
Robbie Hiser, who led off the inning with a double. The Spartans tacked on another run in the third when
Syeed Mahdi led off with a single and eventually scored on
Roger Hall's sacrifice fly.
Â
But after failing to score in the first three innings against first-time NSU starter
Michael Parmentier, the Lancers broke through in the fourth. Colton Konvicka walked to lead off the inning. He stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Brandon Delk single. Later in the frame, Kyri Washington, who was intentionally walked, scored on a two-out NSU error to even the score.
Â
Longwood took the lead for good in the fifth. Brandon Harvell drew a one-out walk from Spartan reliever
Troy Applin and scored on Mac McCafferty's double. Convicka scored on another NSU error and Travis Biddix singled in another run to extend the lead to 5-2.
Â
The Spartans struck back for two in the sixth. Hall singled and scored on Depp's two-run homer down the right-field line. It was the first career homer for the redshirt sophomore.
Â
But Longwood's big sixth inning proved to be the difference. The Lancers had five hits and took advantage of another Spartan error in the frame. Delk and Connor Bastaich both hit two-run singles in the inning. McCafferty contributed an RBI single and Biddix a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Spartans kept battling and added three more runs in their half of the seventh.
Denathan Dukes drove in
Omar Hotusing with a double to right-center and Mahdi, who had walked earlier, scored on
Andre' Moore's infield single. Hiser capped the inning with an RBI groundout to bring NSU within 12-7.
But that would be as close as NSU would get.
Â
Applin (0-1) took the loss for NSU, allowing five hits and six runs (four earned) in two innings. Parmentier took the no-decision despite allowing just one hit and one earned run in three-plus innings of work.
Â
Michael Catlin (3-0) earned the win for Longwood with two scoreless innings of relief. Zach Potojecki fanned five Spartans in three innings to pick up the save.
Â
NSU was outhit 13-7. Dukes, Moore, Hall, Hiser and Rosario had one hit and one RBI apiece, while Depp drove in two.
Â
The Spartans resume MEAC Northern Division play with a three-game series at UMES this Saturday and Sunday.
