Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Matt Outman picked up his second straight win with eight strikeouts in six innings, and Norfolk State posted season highs in hits and runs in a 12-7 MEAC win over Coppin State on Saturday evening.

Robbie Hiser drove in three runs and was one of six Spartans with two hits as NSU (7-10, 4-3 MEAC North) notched a season high 14 hits to win the series opener.

The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and held off a pesky CSU (1-17, 0-7) team.

Kyle Vaas knocked in the game's first run with a two-out infield single in the bottom of the first inning. NSU then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second thanks to three hits and two CSU errors.
Angel Rosario reached on the first of those two errors to lead off the inning, then stole second base. He scored on a one-out RBI single by Hiser.

Ryan Kilmon followed Hiser's single with one of his own, and both runners moved up on a groundout.
Andre' Moore then laid down a well-placed bunt single down the third-base line, scoring Hiser. Moore swiped second base, and both he and Kilmon scored on a two-out error to push the lead to 5-0.

Coppin rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth thanks in part to three walks by NSU starter
Matt Outman, who cruised through the first four innings. The last of the trio of walks, to Jack Kraft, forced in the Eagles' first run. Randal Mendez then hit a two-run single to bring CSU within 5-3.

The Spartans answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Ismael Herrera, Rosario and
Syeed Mahdi led off the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. CSU starter Yayha Muhammad then hit Hiser with a pitch to force in Herrera. Rosario scored on a sacrifice fly by
Denathan Dukes.

NSU tacked on three more in the sixth as Mahdi and Hiser both stroked RBI singles. Moore hit a sacrifice fly and Herrera had an RBI single in the seventh.

CSU didn't go quietly, scoring twice in the seventh and once in the ninth. The Eagles, down 12-7, loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but
Cooper Jones recorded a strikeout to end the game for NSU.

Outman won his second straight start to improve to 3-1 on the year. He fanned eight hitters over six innings. Outman allowed five hits and four runs, three earned. Jones earned his second save of the season.

Muhammad (0-6) took the loss, allowing nine hits and 10 runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings.

Vaas, Herrera, Rosario, Mahdi, Hiser and Kilmon had two hits apiece for the Spartans. Rosario scored three runs and Moore knocked in a pair.

Mendez was 3-for-5 and Percell 2-for-4 for the Eagles.

The teams play a doubleheader starting at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
