NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In a match that took three postponements before it was finally played, the Norfolk State men's tennis team came away with a 6-1 victory over Hampton on Tuesday night at the Centre Court Racquet Club.
Â
The Spartans won the top five singles matches and two of the three doubles contests to improve to 2-9 on the season. The loss kept Hampton winless at 0-4.
Â
Originally set to be played on Feb. 2, the matchup with the Pirates was pushed back three different times due to weather. Just two days after its MEAC season opener, NSU picked up the win over a Northern Division opponent.
Â
Hampton gave NSU fits throughout the evening, with two singles matches going to three sets each. At the No. 2 position, senior
Igor Braga defeated Miguel Suarez in the first set, 6-3, before Suarez won the second, also 6-3. In the third set, Braga picked up a 6-4 win for the match victory.
Â
At No. 4 singles, freshman
Antonio Pejic dropped the first set to Joshua McQueen, 6-3, before Pejic rallied to win the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-2. Also at the third spot in the lineup, freshman
Fatehdeep Singh won 6-2 in the first set over Peter Odegbami before having to win the second set, 7-6, including 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Â
Senior
Pascal Domnik had an easier time at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Luke Thompson. Senior
Daniel Grauel won 8-2 over Fedor Shirin at the No. 5 position.
Â
Hampton got its only points of the match when Lakshmana Satchithananthan defeated senior
Shaheed Mourillon-Swift at the sixth singles spot, 8-1. Satchithananthan and McQueen also won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5 over Pejic and Mourillon-Swift.
Â
In the other doubles matches, Domnik and Singh earned an 8-6 win over Suarez and Thompson, while Braga and Grauel scored a much easier 8-1 victory over Odegbami and Shirin.
Â
"The guys battled and pulled out a win over a much improved Hampton team," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "The win certainly gives us a boost of confidence."
Â
NSU will attempt to keep that confidence going next week when the Spartans play Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC Southern Division Round-Up in Florence, S.C., on March 14 and 15.
